I wrote this paper for a Spanish Literature course about the lack of presence, personality, and description of the female character in Gabriel Garcia Marquez' book: "Crónica de una muerte anunciada". Marquez uses magical realism to create microcosms of Latin American society as a way of critiquing societal norms. In my essay, I argue that instead of pointing out the strong social stereotypes surrounding women in Latin American society, he reveals his own biases by perpetuating them. Marquez could have empowered his female characters, but he did not. When it comes to sexism in Latin American culture, it is clear that Marquez' understanding of it is limited, and we do not see the kind of social criticism that we have become accustomed to in his work.
